러시아 민요 '머나먼 길'을 리메이크한 <Those were the days>

<Those were the days: 도즈워더데이스>는 영국 웨일스 출신의 싱어송라이터 메리홉킨스(Mary Hopkin)가 18세 때인 1968년 8월 데뷔하면서 싱글로 발표한 곡으로 영국 싱글차트와 오리콘 차트 1위, 빌보드 핫 100 2위, 1968년 연간 빌보드 차트 17위에 오른 인기 올드팝송입니다.

이 곡의 원곡은 소련의 작곡가 보리스 포민(Boris Fomin, 1900~1948)이 1924년에 작곡한 '머나먼 길(Дорогой длинною)' 입니다. 원곡에 새로운 영어 가사를 붙여 리메이크한 곡으로  프로듀싱은 비틀스의 폴 매카트니가 담당하였습니다.

메리 홉킨스는 15세때 선물로 받은 기타를 독학으로 마스터하고 웨일즈 남부의 클럽에서 연주를 하며 음악활동을 시작하였으며, 친구의 소개로 비틀스의 폴 매카트니를 만나게 되고 비틀스에서 직접 설립한 애플레코드사와 계약하며 이 곡을 발표하면서 단번에 영국에서 스타로 발돋움하였습니다.

이 곡은 젊은 시절 친구들과 술집에서 술잔을 기울이며 꿈과 포부를 키웠던 그 시절을 회상하며 그때가 참 좋았었다고 회상하는 내용의 가사입니다.
